Only 10 days left until the SLS 2011 Unified Literary Contest closes. A reminder: contest winners in the categories of fiction (judged by Jayne Anne Phillips) and poetry (judged by Matthew Zapruder) will have their work prominently featured online in Canada’s premiere literary magazine, The Walrus, as well as published in print in The Black Warrior Review in the United States.

Additionally, they will have the choice of attending (airfare, tuition, and housing included) any one of the SLS 2011 programs – in Montreal, Quebec (June 12 – 25); Vilnius, Lithuania (July 31 – August 13); or Nairobi-Lamu, Kenya (December 7 – 21).

Second-place winners will receive a full tuition waiver for the program of their choice, and third-place winners will receive a 50% tuition discount.

A number of select contest participants, based on the overall strength of their work, will be offered tuition scholarships, as well, applicable to the SLS 2011 programs.

The always reliable Pop Matters has asked nearly every music critic they could get their hands on to share their tips for aspiring journalists, reviewers, and feature writers. Among the host of participants is SLS Montreal faculty member Chuck Klosterman, whose advice is sage, sober, and practical (“Clarity is extremely important, unless you honestly don’t care about how people interpret your ideas.”) Check out the article here (Chuck is at the bottom of the page).
